I was at this trendy cafe buying some freshly baked bread and as I was waiting, I caught a glimpse of an open faced sandwich that was being served to a table. Now this sandwich was like three dimensional. It was full of color and vibrancy. I had no idea what was in it, but I could tell by all the details and ‘flair’ that it was a healthy sandwich that was undoubtedly artistic. And, given that I love creating foods that are artistically stunning, this fleeting image stuck in my head.

Now, you might be thinking, ‘But, Ally, what does this have to do with this recipe for naan bread smoked salmon veggie squares???’ Well, a lot. A few days later we were invited to a dinner party, and, of course, you always ask, ‘What can I bring?’ And, the hostess said, ‘An appetizer!’ Immediately, the image of that chic couture sandwich came to mind. And, I thought, hummmm, how can I transform something like this into an appetizer. Well, here you have it. These smoked salmon veggies squares are an ethereal delight for the eyes!

Costco to the Rescue

I found my Foppen Norweigan Smoked Salmon, 12 ounce package, at Costco. You’re going to only use about four ounces for these squares, so you’ll have plenty left! There are so many uses for this salmon from this recipe, bagels to eggs/breakfast, charcuterie and sandwiches. So, it’s well worth buying if you are loving this recipe!

Yield: About 12-14 salmon squares


  • One large slice naan bread, cut into about 2”x 2” squares
  • ¾ cup whipped cream cheese
  • 14 Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices, thinly sliced, ready to eat, about 2 x 2” squares each, Foppen brand
  • 14 radish rounds, thinly sliced on mandolin
  • 14 carrot rounds, thinly sliced on mandolin
  • 14 cucumber rounds, thinly sliced on mandolin, English cuke or small cukes (not the large ones with waxy skin)
  • ¼ cup Fresh Dill fronds
  • Honey Mustard Dill Sauce, comes with smoked salmon


  • On each nann bread square, dollop about one teaspoon of whipped cream cheese.
  • On each square, fold over a salmon square and secure into the cream cheese.
  • Put on each square, securing into the cream cheese so as not to fall off, a radish, carrot and cucumber round.
  • Top off each square with some fresh dill. Cut the corner (small cut) of the plastic package of the honey mustard dill sauce. Squeeze a small dollop of sauce on each square.
