These simple about one-minute videos will give you bountiful information on how to be a War on Waste Gladiator! It’s a fact that there’s a lot of food waste in America. And, we all can do our small parts to curb this epidemic.
Just read about it. This 2016 article from The Atlantic gives some startling information.
“…according to a Guardian report released this week, roughly 50 percent of all produce in the United States is thrown away—some 60 million tons (or $160 billion) worth of produce annually, an amount constituting “one third of all foodstuffs.” Wasted food is also the single biggest occupant in American landfills, the Environmental Protection Agency has found.”
Learning from Depression Era Parents
Like some of you, I grew up with a Depression era single mother. We didn’t waste anything in those hollers of Southern West Virginia. Ironically, we were ‘green’ and ‘environmentally respectful’ long before it became trendy to do so. We did everything from saving tin foil, holiday wrappings, plastic and glass containers to not tossing out the ends of celery stocks but replanting them to grow fragrant leaves for soup stock. As a kid, it was just part of our lives. We didn’t think a second thought about it. Adopting a mindset of saving, repurposing, stretching and reinventing ways to use things, both food and non-food, can begin and flourish in the kitchen. Do your part! Be a shining WAR ON WASTE GLADIATOR! It’s groovy cool, plus, you’re helping save the planet!
