International Cooking
Today, the term bohemian describes someone with an unconventional, often dismissive, view of social structures and traditions. Modern boho encompasses trends from the beatnik and hippie eras when the cultural aesthetic was similar to the bohemians, and it still represents a counterculture spirit.
International cooking means that we have to embrace some ‘boho’ in ourselves in order expand our palates and our taste horizons. While we’re not discounting the traditional dishes that we grew up on and loved, we’re realizing that it’s big beautiful world. And, it’s defined by our common DNA, food and cooking.
International Cookbook
Ally’s Kitchen: A Passport for Adventurous Palates focuses on the international foods that I’ve come across in my decades of traveling. From the Sahara Desert to St. Basil’s Square in Russia and the back streets of Honk Kong, I’ve had the privilege of tasting foods that define my cooking style.
Writing Cookbooks
Honestly, at first I thought, why should I write a cookbook. There are a gazillion out there. What’s so different about what I’d be doing?
After really digging deep into my soul, I saw that this cookbook I’d be writing unlike others. It would be about me as well as the food. It would be a diary and collection of vignette stories of my travels. And, I knew it would be a treasure someday for my grandchildren and beyond. If you think you can’t do anything then check out these articles when you think you can’t, you do, and cramcation: 10 guidelines for success.
And, so much of writing my cookbook came from my childhood experiences with my Grandmother in West Virginia.
What is Bohemian Food
Bohemian food is the art of preparing delicious food with basic ingredients. While it might be like ‘meat and potatoes’, it’s elevated to a level of divine eating. From the way, food is plated to the special twists that blast the tastebuds.
It’s not about the ingredients. It about what the bohemian cook does with the ingredients. That’s the defining difference.
Bohemian Recipes
The bohemian recipes in my cookbook are more of an artistic form of food. You’ll find different layers of flavor, spice mixtures, new ingredients and elements, and patterns in the food that isn’t traditional.
Bohemian Cuisine
What is the difference between bohemian and hippie? Bohemian fashion is laid back, unconventional, and highly expressive. Like hippies, bohemians are free-spirited and refuse to dress in order to conform. Bohemians are often romantic, with a wonderer like a lifestyle, similar to hippies.
Bohemian cuisine in my cookbook is just that. Free-spirited and at times unconventional and unexpected. From ingredients to combinations and serving, expect something very unique.
How to Start a Cookbook
When I first started thinking about creating a cookbook and just writing those words still sends goosebumps down my spine, I knew immediately that I wanted it to reflect my style, my panache.
Whatever you write about, I believe, it must touch and tell something about you.
Yes, it had to be a boho cookbook. Out there on the shelves of bookstores were thousands and thousands of wonderful cookbooks in about every genre. But, when I searched for ‘bohemian’ genre cookbooks, the pickens were slim.
How Long Does it Take to Write a Cookbook
Oh, yes, there were Eastern European cookbooks, cookbooks with ethnic slants, but there didn’t seem to be anything that came from the viewpoint of a ‘nomadic’ traveler, yes, me, who’d spent decades on planes, trains, ferries, ships and boats exploring foods and places.
I wanted this cookbook to be a ‘passport’ for almost every home cook to travel the world without leaving their own kitchen. Whether this person was in a large metropolitan area or a rural town, I wanted to be able to land in their kitchen on my magic carpet and share the glorious world of food!
Writing a cookbook is a daunting task. It’s not for the unmotivated. You must have a drive. And, when you have deadlines to meet from your publisher, you know that the stakes are high. Don’t miss out my huge failure=big success and harley tales article.
Write Your Own Cookbook
What’s even more exhilarating is that when I pitched my idea to Cedar Fort Publishing and Media they loved it. My proposal was accepted. And within a short time, they had a contract to me to make this dream a reality.
I’ve captured this adventure, and it’s an unexpected journey for me, someone who’s in the third chapter of life, through my journal of posts about the cookbook.
The Adventurous Palate
So, when you have moments of repose, a little down time that needs filling, join me as I travel these roads around the world.
Maybe then when you get the cookbook in your hands, you’ll feel even more of a connection as you’ve journeyed with me.
You create amazing results. My project creates a chance to change your life. I have a chance to be among the best. I have created pink bread. What color chabata do you eat? What is your favorite color?
