Hot Chocolate Cake Recipes

When you combine two of your childhood favorites it’s not only amazing, it’s epic!

And, that what I’m doing with this hot chocolate that’s now a chocolate protein cake. It’s like ‘hot chocolate cake’ in a pan!

High Protein Cake Recipe

  • Protein-Rich: Thanks to the FlavCity Chocolate Protein Smoothie Mix, this cake provides a significant amount of protein, which is essential for muscle recovery and satiety.

  • Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free: Ideal for those with food sensitivities or allergies, making this a versatile option for a variety of diets.

  • Naturally Sweetened: With minimal sugar and the natural sweetness from maple syrup or honey, this cake won’t spike your blood sugar levels.

  • Easy to Make: Simple ingredients and easy-to-follow steps mean you can whip this up in no time, whether you’re making a cake or a loaf.

Healthy Protein Cake Recipe

When you’re thinking of chocolate protein mix that’s actually got some acceptable ingredients in it, you want it to taste good.

You can customize the texture of your treat by using either a cake pan or a bread pan.

Baking it in a cake pan will give you a classic, fluffy dessert, while using a bread pan will give you a denser, bread-like consistency that’s perfect for a quick snack or breakfast.

Protein Cake

You can make this cake with regular flour or almond flour for the gluten free folks.

I’m thinking other GF flours also would work, like rice and coconut flours. However, to be honest, my favorite GF flour is the 1:to:1 gluten free or paleo flour.

This delicious chocolate protein cake is not only easy to make, but it’s also packed with health benefits, making it the perfect treat for anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth without compromising on nutrition.

Using FlavCity Chocolate Protein Smoothie Mix, this cake is gluten-free and dairy-free, making it suitable for a variety of dietary needs. You can make this recipe as a cake or in a bread pan for a more loaf-like texture. Here’s how to whip up this healthy, protein-packed dessert!

Recipe for Protein Cake

FlavCity’s Chocolate Protein Smoothie Mix is more than just a delicious ingredient for this cake—it also provides a variety of health benefits. Here’s why the  smoothie mix or the Keto Hot Chocolate from FlavCity are great choices:

  1. High-Quality Protein: The smoothie mix contains a blend of plant-based proteins that are great for muscle repair and growth.

  2. Gluten-Free: Ideal for anyone with gluten sensitivities or those following a gluten-free lifestyle.

  3. Dairy-Free: NOTE: FlavCity hocolate Protein Smoothie Mix contains dairy, but the FlavCity Keto Hot Chocolate is dairy free. Perfect for those who are lactose intolerant or following a dairy-free diet.

  4. Low Sugar: The smoothie mix is low in sugar, making it a healthy alternative to traditional dessert ingredients that are high in refined sugars.

  5. Rich in Nutrients: It contains essential vitamins and minerals, including antioxidants, to support overall health and wellness.

Moist Gluten Free Chocolate Cake

Without a doubt, this is a moist cake. It’s got a tad sponge texture in a really good way. This makes the slicing of it almost flawless.

And, since I’m using a larger bundt pan, about 10″ diameter, the cake is more thin, which I love.

GF Chocolate Cake Almond Flour

There’s not a lot of work to this cake.

You gather your wet and dry ingredients. Then combine them both.

You bake. That’s about it.

And, the option of the chocolate ganache splatter and orange zesting is, like the walnuts, totally optional.

For me, I think chocolate and orange go together like peas and carrots!

Chocolate Protein Cake

Yield: Makes: One about 10" diameter springform pan

Ingredients

  • Preheat oven to 350
  • DRY INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 scoops FlavCity Chocolate Protein Smoothie Mix
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 3 Tbl. cacao powder
  • 1 Tbl. baking powder
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • WET INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 banana, smashed
  • 2/3 cup coconut milk, unsweetened + a tad bit more to get the right consistency
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 2 eggs
  • OPTIONAL:
  • Chocolate Ganache Splatter (1/3 cup Coconut Milk, 1/2 cup HU Chocolate Chips, 1/2 tsp. butter, salted)
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped
  • Orange Zesting when cake is finished
  • Sea Salt Flakes, garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine in a large mixing bowl the dry ingredients. Blend and mix. Set aside.
  2. In a large 4-cup measuring cup, whisk together the wet ingredients.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and blend well. The batter should be the consistency of a thick milkshake that pours easily. If you need to add a 'tad' bit more coconut milk to achieve this consistency, then please do so. Blend in the walnuts (optional).
  4. Pour into a well-greased springform pan (about 10" diameter) with the bottom lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake in a preheated 350 oven for 29-32 minutes. Do the toothpick test in the center. If it comes out basically clean, all good.
  6. Remove to a cooling rack. Dislodge when cool.
  7. Splatter with chocolate ganache. Zest with fresh orange, Sprinkle on a few sea salt flakes.
  8. GANACHE SPLATTER: Combine the coconut milk and chocolate chips in a small saucepan over medium low heat. Let it start warming. You'll see the chocolate chips beginning to melt. Use a whisk to blend together making a thick chocolatEEEE mixture. If too thick, add a tad bit more coconut milk. Finish with adding the butter. It will make your ganache glisten.

Notes

Using the FlavCity Protein Smoothie Mix, chocolate or brownie batter gives you great protein and collagen.

  1. If I’m making this a day ahead of time and am traveling with it, should I wait to put ganache on it until it’s served? Also, assuming I should refrigerate? Thanks, love your recipes!

    1. Hey, Holli, YES, splatter when you’re about ready to serve. Yes, refrigerate. And, it freezes wonderfully! Enjoy my sweet xoxx ally

What is measurement of the scoop? I only have the flavcity SINGLE SERVE packets…no scoop…so not sure how much to use. Am raring to go with making this cake!

    1. The scoop is basially a single serve package, so two will be fine. Please LMK how you like! xox ally

  3. Can I use Paleo Valley chocolate protein powder in place of Flav City? Would I need to adjust anything?

    1. Yes, you could, Joan. You’d need to add more coconut sugar as the FC Protein Smoothie adds to the cake’s sweetness. Kind of taste your batter and see what your palate likes. I’m not big on super sweet. I’d do 3 scoops of the PV. Please LMK. I haven’t tried the chocolate PV in it! xoxx ally

      1. I have the flavcity brownie batter protein. Would that work?
        Thanks,
        Michele

        1. Hi, Michele, YES, you can use that FC brownie batter! xoxx ally

  4. Eugenia Wisener says:

Is the protein powder necessary? I live in the UK and it is not sold here. Thank you.

    1. I totally understand, Eugenia. You can substitute more of the cacao powder, another 1/4 cup, and coconut sugar, another 1/3 cup and add another 1/4 cup of flour. You of course, will not have the protein count in the cake b/c the protein smoothie powder did provide 50g of protein. But, you’ll still have a delicious chocolate cake! xoxx ally

  5. Great job simplifying something that often feels confusing.

    1. Wow, my friend, what a nice message. I don’t like complicated in my life, and simple for me is the best avenue. Thank you! xoxx ally

    2. How is this DF when the Flav City Chocolate Protein is dairy based?

      1. Heather, you are exactly right. The FC does have dairy. I’ll edit to say no ‘added additional dairy’ other than what’s in the FC chocolate protein smoothie. The original recipe used FlavCity’s Keto Hot Chocolate, which is dairy free. Thanks for you excellent input! oxx ally

  9. Can i substitute the Flavcity chocolate for unsweetened cacao? Or a cacao protein or maybe cacao collagen?

    1. Hi, Martz, most certainly. Actually I didn’t have any cacao, so I did another scoop of FC, plus some unsweetened choco chips in the batter. Worked fine. Cacao protein or cacao collagen would most probably work too. We so enjoyed last night for dessert (w/ice cream!). Please let me know! xoxx ally

  10. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. This recipe was very easy to bake. I use 1/2 cup of applesauce instead the banana. And made cupcakes. Didn’t made the ganache but add salt as garnish. They were delicious.

    Can I omit the banana?

    1. Hi! You could substitute applesauce. 1/2 cup applesauce for one banana. You could also try one egg white. Let me know what you do! xoxx ally

  12. What can I substitute for the coconut milk?

    1. Hi, Kirsten! You could use the same amount of heavy cream or half and half. If you don’t want dairy, you could use a plant (or nut) based ‘milk’ and add to it 2 TBL coconut oil. You could also use plain Greek yogurt (same amount) + 2 Tbl. water/mix. Let me know! xoxx ally

  13. I’m going to substitute Monkfruit for the sugar and sour cream for the banana to keep it Keto. Can’t wait to make it tomorrow! Thanks.

    1. Robin! What a grand idea! Love these substitutions. I’m anxious to have you let me know how it turned out! xoxx ally

    2. Anonymous says:

      Hi there
Could you tell me how much monk fruit would you use instead of the sugar?
And would you use a liquid or granulated monk fruit ?

      1. Hi, Robin, I’m thinking you’re asking about the coconut sugar? As a guideline, one TABLESPOON of coconut sugar convert to 3/4 TEASPOON of monk fruit sugar (granulated). Another guideline is 3:1, so one cup of coconut sugar would be 1/3 cup of granulated monk fruit. Some say you can use 1:1 (same amounts). I’d put less and taste. xoxx ally

  15. Joanne I. says:

I don’t have coconut sugar. Can baking Stevia be used instead?

    1. I think that would work, Joanne. The ratio conversion seems to be 1:1. Let me know how it turns out, luv! Thank you! xoxx ally

  16. Yvette Strick says:

What if you don’t have Flav City chocolate. Mix?

    1. Hi, Yvette, you could use another chocolate mix. You’d need to adjust sugar b/c probably other hot chocolate cacao mixes have more sugar in them. A scoop of FlavCity is about 1/4th cup. This cake is so so good! Hope you try and, please let me know! xoxx ally

  17. No calories per serving ?

    1. Hi, Nick, no I don’t report that with my recipes. But I’d say just a sliver is plenty! xoxx ally
